At sunset on 20 September 2026, members of Upper Rideau Branch 542 came together to commemorate the 86th anniversary of the Battle of Britain- a battle which constituted the first military campaign fought solely from the air, and a battle which served the German forces their first strategic loss of WW II. Golfers took to Rideau Lakes Golf Club for a fundraiser scramble, supporting the Westport Legion. A huge thank you to all the sponsors, for the prize donations! Big thanks to Garter at Bryan's Septic for giving the golfers the opportunity to score $10,000.00 with a hole-in-one. Also, thanks to Gan Chev for donating the meal after play! During our September General membership meeting on 15 September, representatives from various community groups in Westport were on hand to receive donations from Upper Rideau Branch 542 as our tangible measure of "supporting our community". Jim Kelly from the Westport Food Bank received a cheque from Branch President Dave Thurston in the amount of $1,000.00 Heather Huth, representing the Westport Library, received a cheque from our Branch President in the amount of $1,500.

Most members of the Friday Burger team gathered for one last time on 18 September (which was, coincidently, National Cheeseburger Day!) to acknowledge their efforts over the summer months in providing the lunchtime meal through rain or shine to the Legion faithful and numerous first-time customers. Chris Coates & Rick Perreault played in the Zone Golf Tournament July 18th,2026. They came in third, and qualified for districts. The tournament was in Iroquois, they shot well but did not qualify for Provincials.

On Thursday, April 9th, a ceremony was held to mark Vimy Day, honouring the bravery of Canadian soldiers who, on April 9, 1917, stormed Vimy Ridge in France, capturing ground that had been under German occupation. This pivotal battle of the First World War resulted in the ultimate sacrifice of over 3,500 Canadian lives and injuries to nearly 7,000 others, cementing its place as a defining moment in history.

The 2026 Zone Convention was held at our Branch on March 15th,2026. We hosted 8 other Branches as well as members of the Zone Council. It was great to meet the representatives from other Legions.Kudos to the new baking team and the catering team for their serving of baked goods and a great lunch for our guests. Many thanks to the members of the Executive who helped with the set-up which gave the hall arrangement some considerable elegance!
